Molina Contemporary

A framework for curatorial and cultural action.

I begin most projects with two questions: What kind of context allows art, artists and audiences to share an experience that can shift how we understand empathy, enjoyment or social engagement? And why does that matter?

I am an independent curator and editor based in New York. My work revolves around questions of identity and place, migration and memory, and, increasingly, how these are framed by our uneasy and often fractious relationship with the environment.

In London, I founded Spain NOW! in 2008, with its first public season in 2009. Across sixteen years of programmes, it brought contemporary culture from Spain to audiences through exhibitions, performance, music, film and a wide range of encounters across the arts.

My professional life has also encompassed cultural-policy research for Arts Council England and DCMS through my role as General Manager of the think tank Centre for Creative Communities, as well as work with the Family and Communities Programmes team at Tate Modern. Editorial practice has been another constant: I was Editor of SPN, at the time a groundbreaking digital culture and lifestyle magazine produced for the Spanish Tourist Office in London, Government of Spain.

These different strands — curatorial practice, cultural research, publishing, public engagement and exhibition-making — now come together through Molina Contemporary, the framework for my ongoing work. I am also a Nominator for the Prix Pictet and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).

And, just in case you thought I might get bored, I have recently launched The City Withheld., a very personal photographic and textual impression of my new home, New York.

Established in London, Molina Contemporary began as an intimate salon-gallery. It is now evolving into a framework for my wider curatorial and cultural action.

This evolution allows MC to bring together the different strands of a professional life spent across the arts and cultural sector: cultural research and policy, public engagement, exhibition-making, publishing and independent programming — from my work with the Centre for Creative Communities and Tate Modern’s Family and Communities Programmes to the founding of Spain NOW! in 2008.

Rather than operating as a conventional gallery, Molina Contemporary now provides a context in which these different forms of practice can meet: a platform from which to develop, test and share exhibitions, editorial work, research, collaborations and new projects.

Here you will find selected examples of my work to date alongside projects currently in development.

A platform for another idea of contemporary Spain.

I founded Spain NOW! in London in 2008. Its first public season followed in 2009, bringing together contemporary culture from Spain across visual art, performance, music, film, literature and architecture.

Following my recent move from London to New York, Spain NOW! is currently taking a sabbatical from public programming — not from activity. The initiative remains very much alive, using this period to consolidate its archive and develop what promises to be an exciting new chapter.
